The main roots of Ginseng are cylindrical or spindle-shaped, 3-15 cm long. The surface is grayish yellow, the upper part or the whole part has sparse and intermittent rough cross lines and obvious vertical wrinkles, the lower part has many branches, and bears most slender fibrous roots. There are often no obvious small verrucous protuberances on the fibrous roots.
Ginseng has reed head, branches and fibrous roots. No cross scar. The cross-section is silty, the cambium ring is not obvious and there are cracks.
The main roots of American ginseng are generally short, 3-12 cm long, spindle-shaped, cylindrical or conical, with transverse rings and linear pits, and with fine, shallow and longitudinal wrinkles and fibrous root marks. There are one to several lateral roots in the middle and lower part of the main root. The branching angle is large and most of them have been broken.
American ginseng has no reed head, branches, fibrous roots, transverse scars, slightly powdery cross section, obvious cambium ring and obvious resin duct in cortex.
